Analysis of Realism in Ilo Ilo

 I argue that the realism of the Singapore film Ilo Ilo is increased through the handheld shaky shots, use of close-ups and lack of non-diegetic music. This lends the film a documentary-like realis, and creates a sense of voyeurism and discomforting closeness between characters in the claustraphobic realm of their flat.

Analysis of mise-en-scene in Se7en

There are 4 elements of mise-en-scene that I will be looking at in Se7en - the setting, lighting, costume and acting. The first scene I will be looking at is the scene where the cops are chasing John Doe. An analysis of the setting and lighting is seen below through the different locations of the scene.  Below, we see how the setting in the film in fact aids the staging of the acting. Next, we will be looking at the contrast between the narrative (fabula) beginning and ending of the film and analysing the acting, setting and costume.
